Abbott Northwestern's Vascular Center
Abbott Northwestern’s Vascular Center The Vascular Center, located on the second floor of the Abbott Northwestern Heart Hospital, is a new division of this nationally recognized institute of excellence. The Center provides comprehensive care to individuals with vascular health conditions and diseases.
Vascular disease is a term for a wide range of diseases that affect the vascular, or blood vessel, systems of your body. This means the arteries or veins may not be working as well as they once did.
Vascular disease can affect important body organs including the:
- Heart. It can cause chest pain (angina), a heart attack or heart failure.
- Brain. It can cause strokes, transient ischemic attacks (TIAs or mini-strokes) or dementia (changes in personality, behavior and memory).
- Kidney. It can cause kidney (renal) failure. Renal failure happens when the kidneys can no longer rid the body of waste products and fluid.
Vascular disease can also affect your arms and legs. It can cause poor circulation and skin ulcers (sores).
Vascular diseases are often classified by their blood vessel type or location in the body. Choose a link for more information on:
The Vascular Center has assembled a team of specialists whose skill and expertise offer advanced perspectives in diagnosing and treating vascular conditions. This team includes cardiologists, vascular/endovascular surgeons, vascular physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

Patients at the Vascular Center benefit from the latest in medical technology. This technology allows our practitioners to visualize the blood vessels with great clarity. There are three common approaches.
Our new endovascular operating suite allows the vascular surgeon to treat diseases of the blood vessels without traditional incisions. With this advanced facility combined with expert surgical capabilities, the Vascular Center offers treatment for:
- aortic dissection
- abdominal aortic aneurysm
- cerebrovascular disease
- claudication and critical limb ischemia
- mesenteric ischemia
- renal artery stenosis
- thoracic outlet syndrome
- thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm
- venous insufficiency.
Clinical research programs provide opportunities to advance the treatment of vascular diseases. Through the Minneapolis Heart Institute® and Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, clinical trials currently underway focus on new therapy for PAD, claudication and critical limb ischemia, angiogenesis, renal artery stenosis and endovascular therapies.
Peripheral Vascular Research
Patients with vascular disorders have several treatment options. These including lifestyle changes, risk factor management, medication therapy, and traditional vascular surgery and endovascular techniques such as angioplasty and stent placement.
Individualized treatment plans are designed to:
- improve quality of life
- preserve independence
- prevent complications
- slow vascular disease progression
- provide ongoing management.
