Vascular disease occurs when the normal flow of blood is impaired in the arteries, veins or lymphatic vessels.

• Artery: A large blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the body.
• Vein: A large blood vessel that carries blood from the body back to the heart.
• Lymphatic Vessel: Microscopic vessels that transport electrolytes, protein and nutritive fluids from the tissue fluids back to the bloodstream.

Some vascular diseases are common and include disorders that block blood flow in the arteries to the brain, heart, kidneys, or legs. Other vascular disorders cause blood clots and other abnormalities in the veins. Diminished blood flow can arise from many causes, including your heredity. Vascular disorders are also caused by smoking, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other “risk factors” commonly associated with heart disease. Vascular disease can also be caused by other medical illnesses or trauma.
